08 Dec Bergen Point’s Christmas Village
It’s that time of year again where the snow breaks fall, Christmas carolers sing “Silent Night” and “Jingle Bell Rock,” while movies such as, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” plays at downtown Bayonne’s Trinity Parish during Bergen Points Christmas Village on Saturday, December 9th. Bergen Point’s Christmas Village makes it’s first appearance, and hopefully not it’s last, to promote holiday cheer, local merchants, and the neighboring community. The Bergen Point Merchants Association will transform Broadway, between 5th and 7th streets, into a Christmas Village. Each business within the Bergen Point section of Bayonne will host specific holiday themed events starting as early as 10am. The Trinity Parish in Bergen Point plans on hosting an annual breakfast with Santa, which has been a tradition for the establishment in the past 11 years prior. This year, with free admission, the event starts at 10am and ends at 1pm. During this time frame, visitors have an opportunity to relive the Santa experience with purchased photos and warm baked goods.
Christmas classics including, “A Christmas Story,” “Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer,” and “The Santa Clause,” will screen throughout the event while children are occupied with arts and craft tables. All the while, parents patiently wait for the cherry cheeked Christmas icon photos, or helpingly purchase additional crafts, excluding those free of charge, costing 50 cents each.
Trinity is one of many Santa stops in Bergen Point. Crafty Fox Studio is hosting, “Cookies with Santa,” during the BP Christmas Village. Participants will create handprint cookie plates alongside Santa’s handprint creation. Afterwards, between 1pm and 3:30pm, local children can enjoy their shaped cookies with juice and quality time with Santa. Let’s hope everyone has their Christmas wishes and lists ready for the big guy. Crafty Fox Studio, also, has an open studio between 4pm and running until 6pm, where all ages can walk-in and paint using the studio’s inventory of ceramics. Kristin Knight from Crafty Fox Studio and Secretary of the Bergen Point Merchants’ Association commented on how the Christmas village showcases talents in the downtown area. “It was as the Association we decided that this Christmas Village would be a fantastic way to highlight the up and coming Bergen Point area,” said Night. Wandering visitors throughout the village can enjoy holiday music, and hot coffee, tea, or cocoa. The studio is also participating as a drop off location for the Trinity Parish Toy Drive. For every new, unwrapped toy or item donated, people are entered in a raffle for a custom painted holiday plate and a gift certificate. But let’s not forget The Bayonne High School’s Carolers who will sing holiday music for the surrounding community. Alongside the carolers are the Theatrical Players from Bayonne High School dressed as Charles Dickenson characters.
The Bayonne Bridgemen Drum & Bugle Corps, a powerhouse program locally, and nationally since the 1970’s, aims to accentuate performing arts education through visual and musical ensembles for the Bergen Point public. According to business owner Deb Peveler, some venders, during the afternoon period, will display purchasable merchandise at BoHo Yoga. Obsessed to Dress, Altari Candles, African Jewelry, and Dana’s Crafts are some of the vendors that’ll promote their collections in BoHo Yoga. Peveler and her husband Lou have been in the forefront of the arts community in downtown Bayonne since 2010 when they were previously located at Crafty Fox Studio’s current location. “We have hosted art exhibits and continue to do so,” said Peveler. “We give artists an opportunity to show their work.
We promote the Boho/Bergen Point area.” “This event will include all the local merchants and I’m sure will be a success,” she said. Walking along the Christmas Village trail is the Dance with Me Dance Studio. Dancers from the studio are planning to perform a choreographed ensemble using music from the Trans Siberian Orchestra. The timeless song Christmas Eve/Sarajevo is only one of many other performances at 4:00pm, 4:30pm, and 5:00pm throughout the Holiday Window Dance Performance. The Dance with Me Dance Studio dancers intend to perform an improved version of The Nut Cracker’s “Sugar Plum Fairy.” After the performance, the dancers and guests can mingle amongst each other during the meet and greet, or possible Q&A portion of the event.
Diana Castore, owner, director, and choreographer at Dance with Me Bayonne, considers the Bergen Point area as a homely artistic neighborhood. “It’s a beautiful area filled with families and children. It’s really a magical little land,” said Castore. Other activities along Broadway include an Artist Holiday Celebration at the Bridge Art Gallery for locally based visual artists, the Little BOHO Bookshop has a special drop-off mailbox for those secretive letters to Santa at the North Pole and the Bake ‘n Brew Coffee Shop will give away hot chocolate and cookies to children and visitors. Later in the evening, the Da Vinci Room will host a family styled holiday dinner with special seating starting at 5:00pm.
